Ray Dixon

Ray Dixon

Having previous with Bianca Butcher would put most women off a man, but when Ray arrived in the Square, heads turned regardless.

First appearance: 10th January 2012
Address: 29b Albert Square
Occupation: Pub chef
Ray's a decent guy. He loves being in the gym, the pub and the football terraces. Although he had a hard childhood, he was always loved by his grandparents and mum. The two things he took from his childhood was a love of good Caribbean food – chiefly his nan’s recipes – and a special kind of optimism from his granddad.
My body's a templeRay Dixon
  • Nicknames: Alfie and Kim call him "Raymondo" sometimes
  • Favourite food: Anything Caribbean and healthy
  • Previous occupations: Was in the army
  • Children: Morgan Butcher and Sasha Dixon by different women. Daughter Sasha likes blood and reading about murders. She wants to be a criminal pathologist one day
Ray joined the army, but not before he got a girl from his estate pregnant. Although he now sees his daughter as being the best thing in his life, his relationship with her mum isn't the best. He's worked from city to city in various pubs, mostly in the kitchen - he's a great pub chef.
When it comes to the ladies Ray has no problems drawing them in. He did start to fall for Bianca when they lived in Manchester, but he was cut out of the picture when Tony came into her life. Now Ray's dedicated to getting to know the son he never knew he had - Morgan, when he has the chance.
Good looking Ray caused quite the stir when he appeared on the Square, but it was the vivacious and curvalicious Kim Fox who got his notice. But after snogging her sister Denise, Ray realised that his heart was no longer in the relationship, and broke things off with Kim, leaving her devasted.
Now Ray has been helping out old flame Bianca with her problems with Liam, attempting to be the father figure he thinks Liam might be missing. But Ray's approach may be falling on deaf ears as Bianca struggles to contain her rebellious son.

Patrick Trueman

Patrick Trueman

With his trademark trilby cocked to one side, his taste for Caribbean rum and an eye for the ladies, Patrick is a mainstay of the Walford community.

First appearance: 13th September 2001
Address: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Senior Potman/Barman at the Queen Vic
Trouble is always just round the corner (shop) for Patrick Trueman. Former owner of Walford's Minute Mart, Patrick is as much the go-to guy for words of wisdom as he is for snacks and soap powder.
Yeah, man!Patrick Trueman
  • Favourite drinks: Rum
  • Criminal record: Arrested for his involvement in the 1958 Notting Hill Riots
  • Military careers: Sailor
  • Favourite music: Ska, also music by Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles
  • Hobbies: Drinking, playing dominos and gambling
Born in Trinidad, Patrick came to the UK in the 1950s to find work. He was subjected to racism and, during the 1958 Notting Hill race riots, was convicted of assault. Later Patrick married Audrey after she allegedly fell pregnant with his son, Paul. In 1970, they had a second child, Anthony but Patrick left Audrey and the children shortly after, scandalous behaviour!
Patrick arrived in Walford for Audrey's funeral, and saw his sons again after decades apart. After a while the Trueman brothers accept Patrick but Paul became suspicious and secretly performed a DNA test, where it was revealed that Paul is not Patrick's biological son! However, despite all the upset, Patrick and Paul managed to maintain a father-son relationship.
Patrick became close friends with Jim Branning who helped him win the heart of Yolande with love letters after Patrick has a holiday romance with. As a result, Yolande moved to Walford and married Patrick. Paul started to deal drugs for Andy Hunter which ultimately lead to his death as he tried to double-cross him... bad move Paul. Patrick was devastated to lose his son and began a vendetta against Andy.
For a time, Patrick rented the car-lot and hired Pat to do the bookkeeping. Patrick and Pat began a casual affair, which Yolande discovered and she threatened to leave, but Patrick persuaded her to try and rebuild their marriage. Yolande remained, but her relationship with Patrick was never quite the same, and they spilt.
Since Yolande's departure Patrick's taken in 'daughter' Denise, and her (diminished) flock. He's no saint, but Patrick did find the strength to forgive the man who killed his fiancée.
He's also been a good friend to Dot and Jim. Since Jim moved into the nursing home, Patrick misses his favourite drinking buddy. But Denise and her sister were always on hand to join him for a swift drink or two - 'yeeah man' *snaps fingers*. However, Patrick's age has caught up with him, and after a nasty fall, he is now unable to look after himself... can Denise and Kim step up to look after him?

Played by Rudolph Walker

Jay Brown

Jay Brown

You know you've lived a hard life when being part of the Mitchell family brings you stability. But that's been Jay's experience. He was a loose canon until he found a family and the love of a good woman...

First appearance: 14th December 2006
Address: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Mechanic
Street-smart Jay was hit hard by the death of his dad, Jase. Left to fend for himself, he resorted to a life of petty crime and anti-social behaviour. Without some help, Jay seemed destined to end up in prison.
Got a problem?Jay Mitchell
  • Names: Used to be called Jay Brown
  • Vices: Used to smoke when he was younger
  • Education: Quit Walford High School on his sixteenth birthday
  • Hobbies: Boxing
  • Dislikes: Vegetables
But beneath the street-smart front, there beats a good heart. Abi Branning could see the good in Jay, and their relationship transformed him. Add to this his joining the Mitchell fold, and the Jay we see today is very different from the one who once mugged Lucy Beale or got stabbed by gang members.
Jay might have changed but he hasn't gone soft. He can hold himself in a fight and he's afraid of nobody - that's why he fits in so well with the Mitchells. But after the tragic night in March 2012, when Jay witnessed Ben kill Heather, Jay's life began to fall apart. Suddenly his association began to look like a curse, instead of a blessing.
But Jay still has best mate Lola and girlfriend Abi by his side, so things aren't all bad!

Played by Jamie Borthwick

  • Jamie's favourite EastEnders character is Phil Mitchell. He says, "He's the one that really stands out for me. The Mitchells are great."
  • Jamie's a West Ham fan, like castmate Perry Fenwick (Billy).
  • He enjoys watching boxing.
  • Jamie appeared alongside Shane Richie in the TV show Celebrate Oliver!

Fatboy

Fatboy

He's the man with the plan, a hustler with several personas and an eye for the ladies...

First appearance: 5th January 2010
Address: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Junior pot boy at The Queen Vic
When God was giving out confidence, it might seem like Arthur 'Fatboy' Chubb bagged the lot. But he's a man of contradictions. On the surface, a bling-toting, big-talking hustler, who at least 40% of Walford need an interpreter to understand. But underneath his sharp exterior is something much softer.
Man's gotta plan!Fatboy
  • Hobbies: A DJ by night - and getting paid for it
  • Favourite food: Chicken breast - hot and spicy
  • Dislikes: Food that's been touched by bare naked hands
  • Possessions: Used to own an ice-cream van called 'Fatmobile' and has an old teddy bear called Mr Cuddles to bring him luck
You might expect his best mate to be an Asbo-wielding ex-con, but it is in fact bible-bashing octogenarian Dot Branning who prefers to address him by his real name. She teaches him biblical tracts, he teaches her street lingo. It's a beautiful relationship.
Above all, Fatboy is looking out for a pengalicious baby girl with a batty like Beyonce. However, his efforts to charm the ladies often ended in heartache. Fatboy tragically found himself in the friend zone with both Whitney and Mercy, while his hopes of securing himself a cougar in Denise were short lived. But now it seems that Fatboy has found the girl of his dreams in Poppy... lets hope this uber cute couple can make the distant!

Dexter Hartman

Dexter Hartman

Determined, strong-willed and head-strong, Dexter’s a straight-talking realist who lives by his own moral code.

First appearance: 7th January 2013
Address: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Mechanic
Growing up without a dad has made Dexter quite self-reliant - and more than a little crafty. He doesn’t like to dwell on the bad and certainly doesn’t have time for self-pity.
Dexter’s philosophy is to keep his head down and crack on with his life. It’s what’s kept him out of trouble on his estate - that and his mum Ava’s watchful eye. This doesn’t mean Dexter can’t hold his own in a fight. He’ll push back if pushed hard enough, but he’ll pick his battles. When Ava tried to help Bianca, Dexter was determined to stop her... he's been there, done that with the kids on his estate, and wants no reminders of the life he could have been leading if it wasn't for his mom. It seems like his worries were founded, as when Ava and Bianca sent the police to Kane's house, the rest of the gang sought payback and trashed his house.
I've got it covered!Dexter Hartman
Dexter’s inherited his mum’s easy-going outlook, but like her, he won’t suffer fools. Dexter is fiercely protective of his mum and he’s seen off some of her old boyfriends in the past! But get on the right side of Dexter and you’ll find him friendly, good-humoured - and just a little bit mischievous…

Played by Khali Best

"I am delighted to be joining the cast of EastEnders," said Khali of his new role. "Working with such great actors so early in my career is an amazing opportunity. I am really excited to see what the writers have in store."

Dennis Rickman Jnr

Dennis Rickman Jnr

Dennis Jnr has lived a sheltered life-his mum Sharon is very over protective of her little Denny-but is it any wonder considering his Dad's tragic demise?

First appearance: 13th August 2012
Address: 29a Albert Square
Occupation: Student
Adorable Dennis Jnr grew up in the sunny paradise of Florida with mum Sharon and her BFF Michelle… so life in The Square should be a bit of a shock to the system!
We're always moving around!Dennis Rickman Jnr
Dennis Jnr was named after the love of Sharon’s life (and adoptive brother) Dennis who was tragically murdered by gangster Johnny Allen before Dennis was born. Up until he arrived on The Square, Dennis had been quite spoilt by Sharon who had fiancée John’s money at her disposal, but that ceased to be the case when Sharon did a disappearing act on her wedding day…abandoning poor Dennis in John’s evil clutches.
Sharon turned to old friend Phil to get Dennis back, and the pair

Ava Hartman

Ava Hartman

Adopted as a baby, Ava didn't plan to seek out her biological family... until Tanya came calling.

First appearance: 20th November 2012
Location: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Deputy Headmistress
Growing up, Ava never asked questions about her biological mum or dad. She had a happy family now and that was all she needed to know.
Likewise, Cora didn't breathe a word of the baby she'd given birth to - was too young and too afraid to bring up in the unenlightened sixties... Until her secret became too much to bear, and Patrick got wind of it... with Tanya joining the dots to discover that she had a secret sister. Cue Tanya taking an investigative path that her mum was not best pleased about...
Ava's shrewd, determined, and strong. She can seem hard, but she's got a good heart. Like Cora. When she noticed Bianca going through a very familiar set of problems with Liam and his new "friends" she did everything she could to help... much to the reluctance of son Dexter. While she had good intentions, her involvement led to her home getting trashed and being branded a snitch... which is not the label you want on an estate like hers. Now it seem she has no choice but to rely on the kindness of the family and friends she has kept herself distant from for so long.
While Ava likes to keep her new found family at a safe distance, her son Dexter enjoys his extra relatives, and has bonded with Cora to an extent that makes Ava feel uncomfortable. She's happy living a quiet life, and has a feeling that the further she gets to know her new family, the more she will become embroiled in their various issues!

Played by Clare Perkins

  • Clare starred in several films including Bullet Boy and Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies.
  • She's also appeared in Men Behaving Badly, Doctors, Holby City and Casualty
  • Clare has even been in EastEnders before! She was a member of a Darts Team in 1997!

Tyler Moon of the Moon Family

Tyler Moon

Tyler's a cheeky chappie with an eye for the ladies. They have an eye for him as well... he once packed out R&R with his exes.

First appearance: 27th June 2011
Address: 27 Albert Square
Occupation: Market stall holder
But Tyler's not all about the swagger. Falling in love with Whitney changed everything. She took some convincing, but now that they're together, Tyler's a one-woman man.
Like what you see?Tyler Moon
  • Football team: Leyton Orient
  • Nicknames: Ty
  • Hobbies: Women, socialising and boxing
  • Usual drinks: Pint
  • Dislikes: Dancing isn't really his thing
Though in the main, Tyler's a easy-going geezer, he has a short fuse and isn't averse to throwing the odd punch where he deems it necessary. He once followed his old man into the boxing ring, but ended up in hospital, so any fights are now purely recreational.
Tyler used to work for the family business, alongside brother Anthony, in an antiques/junk shop called The Emporium. There was nothing in the world that Tyler wouldn't have done for Anthony... it's a pity this wasn't reciprocated when Anthony lost The Emporium to Derek in an poker game! Left on his own, Tyler had to work for Derek... but due to his untimely death, it seems that Tyler can start calling the shots again.
His relationship with his other brother, Michael, is more unsettled. Though this has more to do with Michael's inability to bond with anyone (except baby Scarlett), than Tyler.

Played by Tony Discipline

  • Tony is a huge boxing fan and also loves football. His favourite boxer of all time is Mike Tyson and his football team is Millwall FC.
  • Before EastEnders Tony worked as a Porter at Billingsgate Fish Market from the age of seventeen which he refers to as the "school of life".

Mo Harris of the Moon Family

Mo Harris

Mo loves a bit of dodgy dealing. If you need anything, and we mean ANYTHING, she'll procure it from her mate Fat Elvis. Just don't expect it to pass any British safety standards...

First appearance: 18th September 2000
Address: The Queen Victoria, 46 Albert Square
Occupation: Dodgy Dealer/Pensioner
She's come a cropper with the coppers over tax evasion but she shows no inclination to go straight. And she's currently illegally sub-letting her council house...
Psst! Fancy a bargain?Mo Harris
  • Likes: Partial to a jellied eel, pie and mash, V&T and most alcohol
  • Dislikes: Hospitals
  • History: Went to Butlins in 1958 with her frenemy Pat and took Pat's Miss Butlins sash. Mo later married Pat's brother, Jimmy Harris
  • Criminal record: At one point in the past, Mo was in prison for two years. In March 2007, Mo was sentenced to 100 hours of community service for illegally bringing in large amounts of cigarettes from abroad
Mo loves a gossip, she's always up for a knees-up and never one to turn down a drink at the Vic... especially if someone else is paying.
As the elder stateswoman of the Slater family, she's had her fair share of battles and she'll fight to the death to defend her girls. She's hard as nails and doesn't suffer fools gladly. Unless they cross her palm with silver - or any form of currency really.

Played by Laila Morse

  • Laila's brother is British film actor and director Gary Oldman.
  • Laila played Molly in the 1999 TV production of Great Expectations, which starred Ioan Gruffudd and Charlotte Rampling.
  • Her film credits include Nil By Mouth and Love, Honour and Obey.
  • Laila's a highly skilled swimmer.
  • She's sometimes credited as Jackie Wyles.

Michael Moon of the Moon Family

Michael Moon

A smooth operator with an eye for a quick buck, Michael likes danger - and takes big risks to ensure he gets his own way...

First appearance: 1st October 2010
Address: 27 Albert Square
Occupation: Co-owns and runs Basher Jim's boxing gym
Michael has all the charming characteristics of his cousin Alfie, but with a more sinister edge. Though he's a chancer, Alfie has a good heart. Does Michael even have one?
Come on... you know you want to.Michael Moon
  • Names: It's always Michael, never Mike, Mikey, Mick or Mickey
  • Football team: West Ham
  • Hobbies: Women and making money from boxing
  • Education: Attended the same school as Max and Jack Branning
  • Phrases: "Not the face!" (when involved in a dispute)
Michael loves danger and takes big risks to get his own way. He's also very competitive and flashy, with a manipulative, jealous nature. He wouldn’t think twice about screwing people over – even those he loves.
Love isn't something that comes easy for Michael. His relationship with son Tommy is lukewarm at best. However, in winning the heart of Janine, Michael showed his warmer side. Although he declared himself 'fond' of Janine, pushing her to rip up the prenup on her wedding day didn't give us much confidence in his motives, and Janine obviously saw this too when she delivered Michael an ultimatum; everything he desires (e.g. a massive suitcase of money) or her.
While Michael chose Janine, it was still not enough to banish the doubts she had about him out of her mind, and she departed The Sqaure, leaving Michael holding the baby. While there were doubts over Michael's ability to step up and be a dad to baby Scarlett, with the help of Kat and Roxy, he seems to have formed a strong bond wih his daughter.
Becoming a responsible parent hasn't changed his ways too much though. He didn't miss an opportunity to bed Kat (again) after hearing that Alfie had asked her for a divorce. Tsk tsk.

Played by Steve John Shepherd

  • Steve John Shepherd has previously been seen in This Life, Layer Cake, Waking the Dead, and more recently the BBC Three sitcom Lunch Monkeys.

Shirley Carter

Shirley Carter

Shirley's tough. She lacks social graces, and if a fight kicks off, you want her on your side.

First appearance: 5th December 2006
Address: 18-20 Albert Square (Kim's Palace)
Occupation: Assistant at McKlunky's
Shirley walked out on Kevin, leaving him to rear the kids alone. Motherly love was something that didn't come naturally. But that doesn't mean she didn't care about her kids. It hurt her deeply when Deano and Carly rejected her and moved away.
What you looking at?Shirley Carter
  • Likes: Drinking alcohol, socialising and Indian food
  • Dislikes: Dog racing and reading books
  • Music tastes: 80's
  • Weaknesses: Has bad cooking skills
  • Children: Jimbo (son; deceased), Deano (son) and Carly (daughter)
Luckily, Shirley had her best mate, Hev and baby George to keep her afloat. Hev and Shirl were a Walford staple, and their rendition of Mel & Kim's Respectable at Hev's Hen Night has gone down in the Square's history. Unfortunately, Hev is history too. And Shirley is struggling without her best mate.
We'd say it's lucky that she had the support of her surrogate family, the Mitchells, if they didn't all have Heather's blood on their hands (directly and indirectly)...
When Shirley found out about the Mitchells' betrayal, she was devasted... and Phil asking her to help cover up Ben's dirty secret pushed her that bit too far. She left Phil and drank herself to a stupor, literally in the gutter.
A visit from estranged daughter Carly and her new grandson pulled Shirley back from the brink, and offered her a chance to escape The Square temporarily... but now that she's back, will she keep her mouth shut about Phil's involvement in her best friends murder? And what will she make of Phil's involvement in Lexi's life? Only time will tell...

Played by Linda Henry

  • Before playing Shirley, Linda appeared in EastEnders as Mandy's mum Lorraine Salter, later played by Victoria Alcock.
  • Linda's best known for playing inmate Yvonne Atkins in Bad Girls. She also played a different Shirley in Brit gangster flick, The Business.
  • She's also appeared in Prime Suspect, A Touch of Frost and Cracker.
  • Linda is an animal lover. She has three rescue dogs and enjoys riding horses.
  • Kellie Shirley (Carly) says of Linda: "Working with her has been really good. She's so on the ball and really interesting. I'm in awe!"

Kat Moon of the Moon Family

Kat Moon

As soon as she arrived in Walford with her fake tan, heavy make-up and hoop earrings, Kat was a dose of Viagra to the men of Albert Square.

First appearance: 18th September 2000
Address: 23 Albert Square
Occupation: Market stall holder
Her mum had died, dad was grieving and nan (Mo) was touting stolen meat off the back of lorries (some things never change). Kat had her eye on the Square's eligible bachelors (although married men weren't necessarily off the menu either).
Oi, what you lookin' at?Kat Moon
  • Usual drinks: V&T
  • Cravings: Beetroot when pregnant with Tommy
  • Likes: Watching Sex and the City, clubbing and steaks
  • Dislikes: Live fish in restaurants
  • Criminal record: Went to prison in 2005 and a caution in 2010
Kat wasted very little time establishing herself as a drama queen by shocking everyone with the revelation that her youngest sister, Zoe was in fact her daughter. Then she stole her dishy doctor boyfriend for good measure.
Unwanted pregnancies, suicide attempts, miscarriages - Kat has been through it all. But it was her relationship with Alfie that changed everything. However, the baby swap scandal and those traumatic months where Kat thought that baby Tommy was dead had a huge impact on her and Alfie's relationship.
While their marriage seemed to recover, it didn't take long for Kat's eye to wander. She had an affair with a mystery man. At first, Alfie forgave her. But when he found out it was Derek Branning? It was game over for Kat and Alfie.
Now Derek is dead and Alfie wants a divorce, Kat is left staring woefully at him and his new landlady, Roxy Mitchell, as they play happy families. Just outside the doors of The Vic, Kat has found her calling in life by joining forces with Bianca to run a market stall. We knew that loud voice was meant for something! But in her down time from work, it hasn't taken her long to find herself back in the arms of Michael Moon...

Played by Jessie Wallace

Jean Slater

Possessed of Walford's most impressive cardigan collection, and inventor of such noted culinary creations as Sausage Surprise! (make sure you read that in falsetto) and Jean's Fishy Basket, Jean Slater is a true Walford icon.

First appearance: 16th December 2004
Address: 46 Albert Square (The Queen Vic)
Occupation: The Queen Vic book-keeper/Events Manager
She's had her fair share of setbacks - her ongoing battle with bipolar disorder, her difficult relationship with son Sean and, of course, adjusting to life without Stacey and granddaughter Lily. But don't be fooled into thinking that Jean's a pushover. She can be tough - she's had to be to get where she is today.
Why don't you visit me more often?Jean Slater
  • Likes: Flowers
  • Dislikes: Confined spaces (she has claustrophobia), quizzes and big pants
  • Weaknesses: Can't swim
  • Hobbies: Knitting and cooking
  • Food: Doesn't like touching kidney meat
In fact, Jean has stood up to her fair share of bullies on the Square and has a hard side - it's part of the Slater genetic inheritance.
However, in the main, Jean's kind-hearted - a romantic and an optimist. Though her efforts to find love have been cruelly thwarted time and time again, Jean reckons that men are like cardigans - you have to try a lot on before you find the right one.
Although that's where the allusion ends. Unless, she plans to have a wardrobe full of men, taking some down the charity shop every now and then to make room for more...

Played by Gillian Wright

Alfie Moon of the Moon Family

Alfie Moon

Cheeky cockney scamp Alfie Moon is a loveable rogue, with a, shall we say, unique dress sense (a cornucopia of blindingly colourful shirts, personalised West Ham tops and his trademark three-quarter length leather coat).

First appearance: 21st November 2002
Address: 46 Albert Square (The Queen Vic)
Occupation: Landlord
Though on paper he's a lying, cheating, bigamist with a criminal record, Alfie is one of the brightest and most-loved characters to ever hit the Square.
Would I lie to you?Alfie Moon
  • Health issues: Infertility but has since become more fertile, although he still has a low sperm count
  • Distinguishing features: Has an appendix scar on his body from 1978
  • Likes: Cream and chocolate roll and comedy
  • Football team: Supports West Ham
  • Cars: Owns his beloved black Ford Capri
A true charmer, Alfie can talk his way in or out of any sticky situation. He even managed to win the heart of Albert Square's leading temptress, Kat Slater, and got a ring on her finger in a romantic Christmas Day ceremony... while failing to mention that he was already wed. Well you forget these things, don't you? Just like he forgot that you shouldn't date two sisters at the same time, when he started to see Little Mo while still with Kat...
Alfie and Kat left the Square to live the good life on the Continent, but Alfie couldn't abstain from trouble for long, ending up in a Spanish nick. Upon the cheeky-chappie's release the pair returned to the Square and became landlords of the Vic.
But life hasn't been all smiles since their return: Kat thought she'd lost her newborn baby, Tommy, only to discover that he was alive - Ronnie Branning had swapped him with her dead son, James.
While their marriage seemed to recover, it didn't take long for Kat's eye to wander. She had an affair with a mystery man. At first, Alfie forgave her. But when he found out it was Derek Branning? It was game over for Kat and Alfie.
Alfie sought comfort in his biggest admirer ‘Peroxide’ Roxy, and the two have decided to give it a go... While Alfie certainly deserves some happiness after the trauma of the last few months, is it too soon for him to embark on another relationship? Or could he and Roxy be the new King and Queen of The Square?

Played by Shane Richie

  • From Pontins blue coat to panto king, jack of all trades Shane Richie has brought a new sparkle to EastEnders since he joined the soap.
  • His other talents include acrobatics, impersonation and darts!
  • As a kid Shane was inspired by David Bowie's persona, Ziggy Stardust.
  • Shane's stage name used to be Shane Skywalker, though he was born Shane Patrick Roche.
  • He's a huge fan of Manchester United.
  • Shane once pulled a man from a blazing vehicle at a petrol station. Fittingly, he originally auditioned for the part of Tom Banks, the fireman. However, the role of Alfie was created especially for him.
  • Shane has some pet hates, such as queues (especially in banks!). He also doesnt like the chat show, Trisha.
  • Shane likes to have his toenails painted. The colour reflects his mood!
  • Shane's TV appearances include The Big Breakfast, Win Lose or Draw, and cop show Burnside.
  • Shane's got two albums under his belt - Shane Richie The Album, and Once Around the Sun.
  • Shane once hosted his own programme, The Shane Richie Experience.

First appearance: 24th July 2007
Address: 46 Albert Square (The Queen Vic)
Occupation: Manager and Landlady of The Queen Vic
Being a Mitchell, Roxy's not afraid to speak her mind and when she sees something she wants, nothing will stop her… not even if the object of her affections is her sister's man, Jack Branning - with whom she had a baby.

Phil Mitchell of the Mitchell Family

Phil Mitchell

Phil doesn't suffer fools gladly. He punches first, and thinks later. Don't mess with this East End hard nut... or else!

First appearance: 20th February 1990
Address: 55 Victoria Road
Occupation: Businessman
It's a reflection of his ability to cover his tracks, silence witnesses, and of his trusted briefs' knowledge of legal loopholes that Phil's only been in prison a few times. But though he's untouchable as the guvnor of Albert Square, he does have an Achilles heel - faaaamily.
Leave it!Phil Mitchell
  • Football team: Supports West Ham
  • Likes: Power, curry, pie and mash
  • Hobbies: Cars, football, boxing
  • Dislikes: Musicals, theatres, dance and snakes
  • Health issues: Heart attack and substance abuse
Being a Mitchell means everything to Phil. He and brother Grant ruled the Square, while grand matriarch Peggy looked on proudly. Not to mention his son and daughter - Ben and Louise. But the trouble with family is, they let you down. Phil and Grant had a tempestuous relationship.
When Phil slept with Grant's wife Sharon, Phil ended up in hospital. Peggy orchestrated a situation that lost him his daughter Louise. Though he made amends with Peggy before she left, he found her stifling. Troublesome sister Sam was a liability. He's always struggled to bond with his son Ben, who has lashed out at his father, frustrated by his lack of understanding and love, even getting him falsely imprisoned.
Another weakness of Phil's? Women. He's been married three times. First marriage was to Nadia, a Romanian refugee to whom he provided a visa. Wife number two was Kathy who left him and took Ben to South Africa; wife number three was Kate who grew tired of his criminal behaviour and left him. Basically, being married to Phil is as easy as being his child.
However, in Shirley he found a real partner. She might not have been a Mitchell, but she had the spirit, and was more than a match for him. She stuck by him through thin and thin - affairs, substance abuse and prison; and was as tough as he is.
But, this is Albert Square and happy couples don't tend to stay that way for long. After Shirley found out that Phil's son Ben was responsible for Hev's murder, Shirley lost her reason. The revelation that Phil had known all along was too much for Shirley to handle and she called it a day on their relationship... but will Shirley keep Phil's secret? Only time will tell.
With all his family gone, Phil looked set to live a solitary life... that is until the surprise revelation that son Ben fathered Lexi, and he is actually a Granddad! Phil fought tooth and nail to try and get Lexi back into the Mitchell fold, even recruiting old flame Sharon into his ruse. Now he has custody of Lexi, will he let Lola be part of her life, or will he decide that Lexi is better off under his watchful eye?
Phil's still has some pretty strong feelings for old flame Sharon, and has constantly tried to get between her and hubby to be Jack... he was gutted when Sharon turned down his wedding proposal in favour for Jack.  Phil's even tried to make Sharon jealous by dating her best mate Tanya, and while that relationship died before it ever really got started, it was enough to get Sharon examining her feelings for the two main men in her life. Although she went on to share a secret kiss with Phil, Sharon decided to go ahead with her wedding to Jack, and leave the past where it belongs... pity Jack didnt feel the same way! Jack realised that the love he felt for Sharon could never compare to what he shared with Ronnie, and decided not to go ahead with their wedding.

Lola Pearce

Growing up in foster care, Lola expects to be given nothing from life... that's why she takes it herself.

First appearance: 12th July 2011
Address: Basement Flat, 89 George Street
Occupation: Apprentice at Booty's
Bright as a button but with a mouth that runs away with her, Lola is wild. A self-reliant person who does what she has to do in order to get what she wants, she's not to be messed with.

  • Distinguishing features: Platinum blonde hair and navel piercing
  • Favourite food: Cod and chips and saveloy with gherkin
  • Personal habits: Drinking and stealing
  • Criminal record: Petty crime, arrested and tagged for criminal damage
After her mother abandoned her when she was just three, Lola was passed on to her gran by a father who just wanted to carry on with his life. She saw him occasionally - when he wasn't in prison - but he is no more than a distant figure in her life. Lola's gran did her best, but when Lola was nine she was taken into care. Not that she minded - it seemed like luxury to her.
Lola learnt a few valuable life skills in care - none of them strictly legal. But though she has an eye for mischief, Lola's always been too wary to get into really big trouble.
Though Lola has a hard edge, she's loyal and loving to those she can trust. She loves her 'pops', Billy Mitchell, ferociously and when she got pregnant with Ben Mitchell's baby, nothing could prepare her for the overwhelming love that being a mother to baby Lexi would bring her.
However, after getting into a fight by defending pal Abi, Lexi was taken away from Lola, breaking her heart. But after learning that Lexi was actually his granddaughter, Phil Mitchell was on the case, desperate to get the last remaining part of his family back into the fold. Now that Phil has been granted custody of Lexi, is Lola going to get her baby back in her life… or will Phil decided that he knows best?

Billy Mitchell of the Mitchell Family

Billy Mitchell

Down-on-his-luck Billy Mitchell is renowned within the Mitchell tribe as being the weakest link. He possesses none of the alpha male tendencies of his thuggish, less hirsute cousins, nor does he possess the entrepreneurial skills of the rest of the family.

First appearance: 9th November 1998
Address: Basement Flat, 89 George Street
Occupation: Unemployed
Billy was a nasty piece of work in the early years, the result of a tough upbringing. With time, however, he's mellowed considerably. Unfortunately, this big softie didn’t manage to keep his family together - ditzy Honey left him, taking the kids with her.
Oh go on, give us a chance.Billy Mitchell
  • Likes: Thriller films and crisps in sandwiches
  • Health issues: Has had panic attacks
  • Childhood: Neglected by his parents so he ended up going into a children's home at the age of ten
  • Nicknames: Called 'Skidmark' by Julie Perkins
  • Weaknesses: Can't swim
Billy then took young fatherless Jay under his wing, and made him part of the Mitchell gang, only for Phil to take over as Jay's surrogate dad. Shortly after, Billy's partner, Julie left him.
Billy isn't one of life's winners, but he’s good-hearted and well-meaning. Though he's partial to the odd criminal enterprise to get himself out of a spot of bother, especially if his family is in need. Torching E20, stealing money from the charity collection box at the Queen Vic, an unsuccessful attempt at drug dealing and fraudulently using Janine's credit card to pay for Lola's nursery furniture are just some of his misdeeds. When he was picked to carry the Olympic torch, Billy finally became a hero for a day, earning the respect and admiration of the rest of the residents on The Square... although things went quickly back to normal after that!
A die-hard West Ham fan, Billy's now a great-grandfather to little Lexi. Billy doesn't want to see Lexi turn out like the rest of his family; spending their lives in care. When Lexi was taken off Lola, Billy was determined to get her back, even if this meant having to relinquish control to Phil Mitchell... he may now be regretting this decision, as Phil seems to be getting a it too comfortable as Lexi's carer.

Tamwar Masood of the Masood Family

Tamwar Masood

Super-geek Tamwar looked like he was bound for the ivory towers of academia, but luckily he decided to stay in Walford to lend his blend of sardonic put-downs and dry wit to every occasion...

First appearance: 1st October 2007
Address: 41 Albert Square
Occupation: Market Inspector
His failure to get into Oxbridge was a massive blow to overbearing mum Zainab, who was using her son's academic achievements as a stick to beat arch-rival Denise Johnson. However, he earned her forgiveness by rescuing the family (temporarily) from financial ruin and became the proud owner of the Argee Bhajee... until brother Syed ran it into the ground and the baliffs were called!
Really...?Tamwar Masood
  • Allergies: Cats
  • Likes: Sci-Fi and stand-up comedy
  • Dislikes: Football
  • Signature dish: Aloo gobi
  • Favourite food: Fish and chips
Unlike his handsome brother Syed, nerdy Tamwar didn’t have much luck in love when the family first arrived on The Square. He made a pass at Syed's lady Amira, and rather than the saucy smacker he craved, got a smack across the face instead.
While his cheek was still stinging, Afia came along. She saw past his awkward nerdy-ness, romance blossomed and she became his wife.
But outside forces have pushed Tamwar and Afia apart. Her father Yusef drove a wedge through Tamwar's family, and nearly destroyed his mother. Yusef died in a fire, in which Tamwar received serious burns.
Tamwar and Afia's relationship never quite recovered. Ultimately, they realised that they wanted different things from life - Afia left on her moped for travel and adventure, Tamwar stayed at home.
Zainab's leaving was a massive blow to Tamwar, and finding out about his Dad's near miss with the fragrant Ayehsa made Tamwar feel even angrier and isolated. Masood encouraged Tamwar to get a job as Market Inspector to give him confidence and to raise money to finally send Tamwar off to University... but does he command enough authority on the market to make a success of his role?

Played by Himesh Patel

  • Playing Tamwar Masood is Himesh's first professional acting job
  • On the morning of his EastEnders audition, he had to sit his GCSE science exam. Luckily, he passed both!
  • His interests include playing football and creative writing, particularly scripts. He wrote episode 2 of series 3 of E20.
  • Himesh's sister once spotted Nitin Ganatra (Masood Ahmed) in a restaurant and got his autograph for Himesh. On hearing that Himesh wanted to be an actor, Nitin wrote a note hoping that they would work together some day. Little did he know that Himesh would one day play his on-screen son!

Masood Ahmed of the Masood Family

Masood Ahmed

The Alpha 'mail' of the Masood family, good-natured postman Masood spends much of his time smoothing over the problems in his family.

First appearance: 16th October 2007
Address: 41 Albert Square
Occupation: Postman
As well as his postal duties, Masood used to co-run Masala Masood, and was coaxed into buying the Argee Bhajee, which he promptly handed over to Tamwar. In spite of, or often because of their business ventures, the Masood family frequently seem to be in debt. And even though his intentions are usually good, Masood often makes financial matters worse. The family business came to a head when the bailiff’s arrived at Christian & Syed’s wedding, repossessing the Argee Bhajeee.
Calm down, Zee, let's talk about this...Masood Ahmed
  • Personal habits: Gambling, Chews nails
  • Favourite food: Chooza Palak, cheese and onion crisps
  • Favourite drink: Orange juice with lemonade
  • Hobbies: Cinema
  • Dislikes: Rugby
The Masoods have had their fair share of drama while they've been on the Square. Masood may stamp his foot now and then, but with a wife like Zainab, life was mostly a peace-keeping mission.
The entire family nearly burst at the seams as they struggled to deal with son Syed's homosexuality with Masood and Zainab later splitting. Masood then got together with his best mate, Jane Beale, and Zainab took up with the villainous Yusef who met his end after a heated battle with Masood in the fire at the B&B.
Shortly after, Masood and Zainab got back together, but their relationship wasn’t all plain sailing! Having the young and beautiful Ayesha in his house made Masood question his life, and he realised he was no longer happy jumping to Zainab's every command, deciding to end their relationship.
Zainab took son Kamil and left The Square. It didn’t take long for Masood to receive more female attention however. Within mere weeks of Zainab’s departure, he was setting up a date with Carol Jackson only for it to be interrupted by the arrival of Ayesha. While Masood was flattered, and tempted to run away with Ayesha, he realised that his family needed him at home.
